Quilt Ministry

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,
I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."
Matthew 25:35

Chapter 412 - Prayers and Squares Prayer Quilt Ministry

Prayers and Squares is a ministry whose purpose is not only to make and distribute quilts, but to promote prayer through the use of quilts.

Our motto is: "It's not about the quilt; it's all about the prayers." With hundreds of chapters around the United States, Canada and Europe, this organization has been in existence since 1997. Our own chapter began in 2006, with only a handful of members presenting our first quilt for tying on January 13, 2007.

We have 18 ministry members who have made and presented over 497 prayer quilts to our parish for tying.

A quilt is assembled, with love, for a specific person in need of prayer, with that person’s knowledge and consent. A heavy thread is used to take stitches through the quilt layers, and the ends are left free to be tied with a square knot. The quilt is then presented to our parish family for tying.

Each chapter of the Prayers and Squares Prayer Quilt Ministry has agreed to abide by the following three guiding principles:

  1. “It’s not about the quilt; it’s all about the prayers.”
  2. Before tying a prayer quilt for an individual, that person must have agreed to accept the gift of prayer in the form of a quilt.
  3. Payment in never accepted for a prayer quilt. It cannot be sold; it is a gift.

We invite anyone to join the Quilting Ministry. None of us are master quilters, there are jobs which have nothing to do with quilting. We always need help in setting up the narthex for a quilt tying, laminating prayer cards to include with each quilt or sorting through/organizing donated materials. We always need donations of cotton material, quilt tops or sheets as well as batting

The Quilt Ministry meet in the Quilt Room, directly across from the entrance to the Adoration Chapel, on the first Saturday of each month beginning at 9:30AM. If you would you like to learn more about this ministry, or if you or a loved one have need of a prayer quilt, please contact the Main Office at 248.887.5364.
